NIH-Funded Research on Remote Technology to Improve Care for Dementia Patients
As baby boomers age, the U.S. faces a growing crisis: rising dementia rates, caregiver shortages and families struggling to support loved ones from afar. NIH-funded research, led by Alyssa Weakley in the Department of Neurology, is pioneering technology that enables remote caregiving — allowing patients with cognitive impairment to stay home while staying connected to caregivers.
Helping Humanity
Weakley's research is reducing health care burdens and promoting patient independence. Without continued NIH support, these innovations will be lost, leaving families with fewer options and increasing strain on an already overburdened healthcare system.
“Not only will reduced funding from NIH have a reduction in the workforce now, we’ll have a reduction in the workforce in the future. And that’s going to have a staggering impact on the development of new treatments, of cures and quality of life for all Americans.”
