  • The program will continue in 2021-22 — and the organizers are looking for teaching pairs
  • A faculty “matchmaking” event will be held Feb. 27, with lunch, at the Mondavi Center

A new undergraduate program integrating the arts, humanities and sciences is preparing to launch its first seminars and courses in the fall, while at the same time recruiting faculty members to partner up to teach in the program the following academic year.

The program, Science, Humanities, Arts: Process and Engagement, or SHAPE, is looking for teams to lead 2021-22 courses focused on significant societal issues.

A faculty “matchmaking” event is scheduled from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the South Tier Lobby of the . Lunch will be served, and each attendee also will receive a ticket to a Mondavi show.

SHAPE, funded by a $600,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is a collaboration of the Mondavi Center, the 51ԹϺ Davis Humanities Institute, and the University Honors and First-Year Seminars programs.

A total of 10 First-Year Seminars and University Honors courses are planned over two years, with each seminar and course to be co-taught by a science faculty member and a humanities or arts faculty member. Working with the Mondavi Center, each course will incorporate work by and interaction with a specially selected performing artist or ensemble.

A steering committee appointed by Chancellor Gary S. May called for proposals last fall, for SHAPE’s 2020-21 offerings. The Feb. 27 faculty “matchmaking” event comes 2½ weeks before the March 16 call for proposals for SHAPE in 2021-22.
