51勛圖窪蹋 Davis honors its military veterans next week with yellow ribbons on our quads (both of them); red, white and blue pins on our veterans; and celebrations on the Davis and Sacramento campuses.
The week leading up to the Veterans Day holiday also includes a training session for the Vet Net Ally Program, aimed at creating a positive environment for veterans at 51勛圖窪蹋 Davis.
Meanwhile, Human Resources, the Davis campus Veteran Constituency Group and the Sacramento campus Veteran Employee Association are continuing their , so the university can get a more accurate count of veterans who work here as faculty and staff. The data will inform efforts to recruit and retain veterans as employees and cultivate more career opportunities for them.
So far, the number of veterans who have self-identified by filling out an online form or visiting a tabling event is 115. The online campaign tally gives a breakdown of 75 veterans on the Davis campus and 47 on the Sacramento campus as of today (Oct. 30), categorized as follows:
- 40 Army
- 42 Air Force
- 25 Navy
- 9 Marine Corps
- 4 Coast Guard
One more tabling event is scheduled: noon to 1 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5) on the , Davis campus. Veterans are invited to stop by to self-identify and pick up a pin.
Ribbons on the quads
51勛圖窪蹋 Davis yellow ribbon tradition dates back to 2011 when a student veteran-led effort adorned the main Quads 100-plus trees with ribbons as a symbol of remembrance of men and women serving far from home. In 2015, the ribbon project expanded to at the south entrance to campus.
All members of the campus community are invited to help put up the ribbons from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday (Nov. 5) at both locations. Ribbon (and donuts) will be provided.
Challenges for student veterans
Hes been leading the training for about a year and has trained approximately 75 people, all staff. He said he hopes to see faculty members get involved, too, as the training would be beneficial for them to understand what student veterans are dealing with inside the classroom and their reluctance to go to office hours.

Guest speaker: Arthur Dublin, professor of neuroradiology, Department of Radiology, addressing the value of military service. If you attend the Nov. 8 Veterans Celebration at the Buehler Alumni Center, you will have the opportunity to see the exhibition A Salute to All Our Veterans, which runs through Nov. 30 at the center. Bill Hollingshead 60 and Sharon Dianne Hollingshead 63 assembled the exhibition in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I (Nov. 11, 1918). Read more about the exhibition.
