Officials with the 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟ Davis Library and Academic Senate confirmed this afternoon (Jan. 31) that contract negotiations between 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟ and journal publisher Elsevier will continue beyond today β the last day of a one-month contract extension β and that 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟ still has access to Elsevier journals for now.
βThis access remains in place until an agreement is reached or until further notice,β reads a memo from MacKenzie Smith, university librarian and vice provost of Digital Scholarship; and Dennis J. Ventry, Jr., law professor and vice chair of the Academic Senateβs University Committee on Library and Scholarly Communication.
Smith and Ventry cited βconsiderable progressβ in the negotiations in January. This followed months of negotiations for a systemwide contract renewal in advance of the Dec. 31 expiration.
βAs negotiations continue, we may reach a point where Elsevier will limit the 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟβs access to new articles (those with a 2019 publication date),β Smith and Ventry wrote. βIf this happens, the library will give the campus community as much notice as we can.β
They encouraged people with questions to send them via email. The 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟ Davis Library also invites people to on the status of the negotiations and 51³ΤΉΟΊΪΑΟβs access to Elsevier journals.
