‘Communities Overcoming Intolerance’: Film and Discussion

Quick Summary

  • Free, public program includes screening of 'An American Mosque'
  • Documentary tells of Yuba City's interfaith healing after 1994 arson
  • Q&A with the director, plus a discussion, followed by reception

The Office of Campus Community Relations announced it will present a program next week on “Communities Overcoming Intolerance,” featuring a screening of the 2012 documentary An American Mosque, about an arson and its aftermath in Yuba City.

“It is a great example of how one community decided to look past fear and hatred to find peace and common ground,” said David Washburn, whose documentary (which has been shown on PBS) recounts the arson that destroyed the Islamic Center of Yuba City in 1994 and the interfaith healing that followed. The award-winning filmmaker will answer questions after the screening.

The organizers said the program also will include a discussion about the larger history of bigotry and violence in the greater Sacramento area. Everyone will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences, and build meaningful bridges with community leaders on and off campus. A reception will follow.

The program, free and open to the public, is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the Ballroom.

RSVP by sending an email to Tammy McNiff in the Office of Campus Community Relations, tdmcniff@ucdavis.edu.
