Theatre puppet production from 2018 streaming this Saturday 

The 51ԹϺ Davis Department of Theatre and Dance production of The Bluest Eye will be streamed this Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. (PDT) as part of this year’s online event. is “...the largest multi-media, pop culture convention focusing on science fiction & fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe…” 51ԹϺ Davis’ 2018 production of the Toni Morrison novel, The Bluest Eye was renowned for its use of South African puppetry. The novel foreshadowed the late author’s rise to fame as “a beloved novelist of black life,” as described in a New York Times headline upon her death in August 2019. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for Beloved and was the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993.

The Department of Theatre and Dance staged The Bluest Eye in Main Theatre in May 2018, marking the first time the play had been performed with puppets. Students had visible roles, too, manipulating the puppets and giving them voice.
