Continuing and Professional Education Gets New Home

51�ԹϺ�� Davis Continuing and Professional Education (formerly 51�ԹϺ�� Davis Extension) announced a new home for its Sacramento classrooms: One Capitol Mall (Suite 260).

Classes will begin meeting in the new location on Monday, July 15; until then, classes will continue to meet at Midtown’s Sutter Square Galleria, beside the westbound lanes of the Capital City Freeway (Business 80). Continuing and Professional Education classes in other locations, including the 51�ԹϺ�� Davis campus, will be unaffected by the move.

‘Extension’ Mission ‘Continues’ Under New Name

51�ԹϺ�� Davis “Extension” is out, 51�ԹϺ�� Davis Continuing and Professional Education is in. Same unit, same mission, new name — replacing the outdated term “extension” with a phrase that says exactly what the unit does.

The division began as University Extension in 1960 and switched to 51�ԹϺ�� Davis Extension in 2001. Other universities began using the term 150 years ago.

The International Center held its grand opening ceremony last Friday (April 21) in the same multipurpose room where 2½ months ago the Office of Global Affairs held a forum on President Donald Trump’s first set of executive orders on immigration.

“We had a standing-room-only crowd or more than 250 students and scholars and others asking questions and airing their very real concerns over the then-sudden restrictions on immigration and travel,” Interim Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter told the audience that had gathered for the International Center’s grand opening.

Craft Center Gallery Show Features Ceramics Made Accessible

After a decade as a potter, Jill Van Zanten received a challenge that sparked a new project: Create accessible ceramics, or cups, plates and bowls that would be functional for people with hand dexterity issues or movement disorders.

She learned that full access for the disabled means a lot more than wheelchair ramps and automatic doors. For some, plates need walls to act as backstops, and mugs need wide, tall handles for easier gripping. Cups should be square-shaped and indented rather than round and smooth.

NEWS BRIEFS: State of the Campus Address

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi gives her State of the Campus address to the Academic Senate’s Representative Assembly, this Thursday (Feb. 25).

The meeting, open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 2:10 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the Student Community Center. Katehi’s address is the first item on the agenda.
