Scientists at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Davis have discovered a gene that can overcome some of those limitations in wheat by controlling plant height, while boosting yield in fields where water is less plentiful. Their discovery was published May 3 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
May 03, 2023 - 10:35am Andy Fell /blog/second-revolution-ahead-green-revolution-grains Scientists Unlock Key to Drought-Resistant Wheat Plants with Longer Roots /blog/scientists-unlock-key-drought-resistant-wheat-plants-longer-roots
Growing wheat in drought conditions may be easier in the future, thanks to new genetic research out of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Davis.

An international team of scientists found that the right number of copies of a specific group of genes can stimulate longer root growth, enabling wheat plants to pull water from deeper supplies. The resulting plants have more biomass and produce higher grain yield, according to a paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
February 27, 2023 - 3:33pm Andy Fell /blog/scientists-unlock-key-drought-resistant-wheat-plants-longer-roots 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Davis Team Identifies Wheat Gene That Increases Yield /blog/uc-davis-team-identifies-wheat-gene-increases-yield
A team of scientists from University of California, Davis, has identified a new gene variant in wheat that can increase the amount of the grain produced, new research published in the journal PLOS Genetics finds.

Wheat is a staple of food diets worldwide and the gene discovery could allow farmers to grow more food without increasing land use. Increased yield could also lower consumer prices, making the crop more accessible.
February 02, 2022 - 10:59am Andy Fell /blog/uc-davis-team-identifies-wheat-gene-increases-yield Gene Discovery May Halt Worldwide Wheat Epidemic /food/news/gene-discovery-may-halt-worldwide-wheat-epidemic-0
University of California, Davis, researchers have identified a gene that enables resistance to a new devastating strain of stem rust, a fungal disease that is hampering wheat production throughout Africa and Asia and threatening food security worldwide.
November 16, 2017 - 7:00am Amy M Quinton /food/news/gene-discovery-may-halt-worldwide-wheat-epidemic-0 Pianist, Wheat Geneticist Recipients of 2017 Innovator of the Year Awards /news/pianist-wheat-geneticist-recipients-2017-innovator-year-awards
Lara Downes, artist in residence at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, and Jorge Dubcovsky, distinguished professor of plant sciences and Howard Hughes Medical Institute researcher, were named the 2017 Innovators of the Year by University of California, Davis, Interim Chancellor Ralph J.
